CDSBEO Schools Raise More
Than
$60,000 for Haiti Relief Efforts
Kemptville, ON
– On January 12, 2010 the island nation of Haiti was
devastated by a massive earthquake. An international
call for assistance was issued soon after, and schools
within the Catholic District School Board were quick to
answer that call.
Director of Education, Wm. J. Gartland
said, “Our Catholic faith tradition invites us to
constantly be looking at the needs in both our local and
global communities and explore how we can make a
difference. Students and staff have recognized the fact
that Haiti needs our help and the response has been
overwhelming.
To
date, the combined total of funds raised from all
schools has grown to more than $60,000.”
The federal government
stated that it would match donations to registered
charities through its
Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund up to
February 12, 2010. Many schools used that date as a
deadline for their fundraising efforts.
CDSBEO schools raised much more than just
money for the cause. Several schools answered the call
to collect gently used footwear to be sent to the
island. This resulted in more than 500 pairs of shoes
being sent to those in need.
“The people of Haiti are in such need
right now,” said CDSBEO Superintendent of Religious
Education, Marg Shea-Lawrence. “We have been focusing on
the Catholic Virtues of faith, hope, love, justice,
fortitude, temperance, and prudence. It is within this
dialogue of Virtues Education that our Catholic school
communities have answered the call to respond.”
Several schools continue
to raise funds for the relief efforts with events
scheduled throughout the month of February.
