 CDSBEO Grade 9 EQAO Mathematics Assessment
Results Continue Trend of Significant Improvement;
Year-Over-Year Increase Continues
(Release September 13, 2006)

Kemptville, On – The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario is proud to release results for the EQAO Provincial Assessment of Grade 9 Applied and Academic Mathematics, which once again show a year-over-year improvement.

A total of 378 students, or 98% of those eligible, wrote the Grade 9 applied math assessment, while 582, or 99% of eligible students wrote the Grade 9 academic assessment.

Board results for all students enrolled in Academic classes showed an improvement over past results, continuing the 5-year trend of an increasing number of students meeting or exceeding the provincial standard. (Results based on all students enrolled in Grade 9, including those who did not participate in the assessment.)

Promising Results

The percentage of students at or above the provincial standard in Grade 9 Applied Mathematics rose by 2% to 40%, while the provincial result was 35%. The success rate for Grade 9 students enrolled in Academic Mathematics rose by 2% and is at par with the provincial result at 71%.

Curriculum Development Yielding Positive Results

CDSBEO Director of Education Ann Perron praised staff for the continued upward trend. “We are so grateful for the dedication of our staff, and are encouraged by the increase in positive results. We are confident that we will continue to see this success rate rise as our staff continues to develop our current programs and focus on the success of each student.”

Board Chair Ronald Eamer was also pleased with the effort put forth by CDSBEO staff and students. “The continued dedication of our Catholic Educators is exemplified in the assessment results. The results also show the successful delivery of our Mathematics curriculum by teachers and how well it is being received by our students.”

St. John Catholic High School Shines

St. John CHS had a strong showing in both the Applied and Academic assessments. The percentage of students meeting or exceeding the provincial standard in the applied assessment rose from 27% to 43%, while the success rate for the academic assessment rose from 47% to 73%.

St. John CHS Principal Terri Brady is proud of her staff and students. “We are very pleased with our Grade 9 results and, in fact, we exceeded our own targets for improvement. We had groups of teachers who met weekly to collaborate with planning and to discuss teaching strategies to improve learning in Mathematics and the results prove that our methodology is paying dividends. We anticipate further increases in the future.”

Program Enhancements to Continue

CDSBEO Principal of Curriculum Charlotte Rouleau stated that program development has been key. “The recent changes in the curriculum for grade 9 mathematics are definitely helping students grasp the knowledge and skills required in the areas of numeracy, algebra, measurement and geometry. Our teachers continue to use the EQAO data to track progress and success and to set ambitious yet achievable goals for both academic and applied mathematics courses.”
