Brockville, On
– Students and Staff at J.L. Jordan Catholic School in
Brockville marked the International Day of Peace by
reciting their annual class covenants - promises made by the
students to their teachers in front of the entire school.
The students and staff bore
witness to the Gospel message by publicly proclaiming their
efforts to be peaceable people, to fulfill everyday
responsibilities, to be mindful of the feelings of others, and
to help those in need.
The classes chose various ways
to express their covenants. These presentations ranged from
performing songs to speaking in front of the group.
“We feel that the International
Day of Peace is the perfect day to mark this occasion,” said
John Healey, Principal at J.L. Jordan. “Our school
maintains the themes of care and prayer throughout the entire
year, and we promote our school as a community of peace.”
Mr. Healey explained that the
school has had every student place a handprint in their
classrooms to represent caring. To mark the day, each and
every student was given a rosary to pray for peace.
CDSBEO Leeds County Trustee Robin Reil was in
attendance. “It is always special to watch the students at J.L.
Jordan make these promises to their teachers. It is a great
example of how our Catholic educators are promoting peace and
encouraging students to share that message with their families
and communities.”
CDSBEO Director of Education Ann Perron
also celebrated the event. “We are so pleased to see the way
in which, Mr. Healey and his staff are encouraging students to
share the Gospel values they are learning with others and to
spread peace in their community. It is wonderful to see how
everyone at J.L. Jordan has embraced our Board theme, We
are people of God…Transforming the World!”
The gathering at J.L. Jordan
was one of more than 3500 Peace Day events that took place in
200 countries to mark the date.
The International Day of Peace
was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981 to
coincide with the opening of the General Assembly. It was
first inaugurated on the third Tuesday of September 1982.
Beginning on the 20th anniversary in 2002, the UN
General Assembly set September 21 as the now permanent date
for the International Day of Peace.
