How does OYAP work?

Once a student is registered in his/her secondary school cooperative education program and commits to a placement involving skilled trades, that student automatically becomes an OYAP candidate. Full registration and apprentice status with the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities will only begin once the employer agrees to sponsor the student.

An apprenticeship agreement is established between the student, (who wants to learn the skilled trade) a sponsor (employer/co-op supervisor) and the Ministry of Training. Each registered student has the registration fee waived, receives a training standard to keep track of competencies learned, is eligible to attend college (night or day) apprenticeship training, and may apply for the "Loans for Tools" program.

After graduation, students can go directly to work full time or attend college (day or night - block or day release) to complete the theoretical component of their training. It is extremely important that the course selections are guided during the grade 9 and 10 option periods to ensure an adequate course link.
