Orientation Program in Trades for Youths in greater Cornwall

WHAT IS IT?
OPTYC2 builds on OPTYC, a program designed to encourage all Grade 10 students to consider trades as potential career paths. OPTYC has run successfully on an annual basis since 2001.

OPTYC2 is a program which targets those Grade 10 students who have made an initial decision to include a Co-operative Education placement in a trades-related area in their course planning for Grade 11.

The program is designed to consolidate their choice of courses in Grade 11 by offering them the opportunity to participate in extensive hands-on workshops by people currently working in trades-related fields and by instructors at St. Lawrence College. It also affords them the opportunity to learn more about offerings at the post-secondary level, specifically at the Cornwall campus of St. Lawrence College. In addition, students will have an opportunity to job shadow in trades-related areas of their choice.

The objective of the program is to allow the students to refine their course selections at the senior secondary school level and to confirm or change their co-operative education placement areas.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The program will be delivered in three phases:

Day 1: Job Safety Training Workshop, Presentation of St. Lawrence College Programs and Tour of St Lawrence College facilities; start of hands-on workshop

Day 2: Full-day in hands-on workshop followed by a celebratory supper at which students will be given certificates of completion

Day 3: One day job shadowing experience in a trades-related area of choice. Areas may include: Construction, Transportation (Automotive), Manufacturing (Welding, Millwright, etc…), Environment, Hairstyling/Cosmetology/Massage Therapy).

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE
OPTYC2 targets those Grade 10 students who are about to enter their senior years of secondary school and who have shown an interest in a trades-related career.

OPTYC2 will provide activities and opportunities to deepen the students’ knowledge of trades-related areas and to reaffirm or alter their choice of courses and/or career paths.

The project is supported by local industry, business, education, government and training institutions.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES AND BENEFITS

The program provides benefits to several groups:

1.  Secondary students will consolidate their awareness of trade areas through intensive hands-on workshops and job shadowing.

2.  Employers will have an opportunity to highlight their work‑sites.

3.  Trades persons will be given an opportunity to demonstrate their skills.

4.  St. Lawrence College will have an opportunity to demonstrate training programs and to recruit future students.

5. The image of trades will be bolstered through the promotion of the program.

Presently, this program is only available to student in Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry counties. Application forms will be available at participating schools. Participants must wear long pants, safety boots and safety glasses.
