French as a Second Language

 

The ability to communicate in French is a valuable skill, because French is one of Canada’s two official languages and because it is a language used widely around the world.

 

Some advantages of studying French:

  • Strengthens first-language skills

  • Enhances reasoning, problem solving and creative thinking

  • Strengthens students’ ability to communicate

  • Develops capacity to understand and respect other cultures

  • Prepares students to participate more effectively in the workplace

 

Programs offered at the CDSBEO:

 

Elementary

  • Core French – Kindergarten to Grade 8 (30 to 40 minutes daily)

  • Extended French – 75 minutes daily (French + one or more subjects)

  • Middle Immersion* – Gr. 5 to 8

  • Early Immersion * – Grade 1 to Grade 8

             (* 150 minutes of French or half day)
 

Secondary (Grade 9 to 12)

  • Core French

  • Immersion (French + 2 or more subjects)

  • Extended (French + one subject)
