PRINCIPAL'S
MESSAGE
|
|
Dear Students and Parents:
We would like to welcome you (or welcome you
back) to St.George's Catholic School, a 50/50
Immersion school for Grade 5 to Grade 8 students.
We have a proud tradition following our patron
saint of students who work diligently in their
studies, compete hard in athletics, volunteer their
time for worthy causes and strive spiritually to
become better people. You will be encouraged to
work to your full potential by attending school
regularly, completing all assignments, using your
agenda, and bringing all correspondence home.
As a Catholic School, operated by the Catholic
District School Board of Eastern Ontario, we are
proud to be an extension of a Catholic home. In
this context, we shall provide a program where
students cultivate their religious, physical,
social, intellectual and personal dimensions. We
are blessed to have Father Louis as our spiritual
director. Throughout the year, he leads us in the
celebration of our faith. Our goal is to provide a
Christ-centered environment as described in our
Mission statement.
As parents, you play the most important role in
your child's achievements. Your encouragement and
support will help your child reach his/her
potential. We depend on you to ensure that your
children eat a balanced diet, get sufficient sleep,
and have a quiet place to do homework. Read to your
children, encourage their curiosity, and show them
that they are valuable members of your family.
Encourage them to attend school consistently and do
not overburden them with too many extra curricular
activities.
This handbook is designed to help answer many of
the questions you may have regarding our school
policies and organizational structure. In it you
will find information regarding the school
staffing, schedules and expectations. Please read
this booklet with your child and retain it for
reference during the school year.
In order to update our records and ensure that
we have current information in case of emergency,
please complete, correct and return the
Registration form to the school. We need your
support and participation in the school council and
the various committees. There is a "Short Trip
Permission Form" to sign. The "Code of
BehaviourAgreement" must be signed by a parent and
the student. If your child needs to take medication
of any kind, please have the physician fill out a
"Request for Administration of Medication"
form.
I am looking forward to meeting you personally
and to serving you throughout the year. I invite
you to call the school if you have concerns or
questions regarding your child's school day. A true
partnership between the home, the church and the
school will ensure your child's success and
happiness.
We hope you have an exciting rewarding year at
St. George's. Get involved whether sports, extra
curriculars or programs. Make a contribution and
leave your mark as someone who gave their best and
made St. George's a better place to be. Have a
great year!
Yours Truly,
Carole Legros, Principal

SCHOOL FACTS
|
|
St. George's Catholic School is situated in the
village of Long Sault which is approximately 8 km
west of Cornwall, Ontario. The name of St. George's
school in Long Sault kept alive the memories of the
chapel in Mille Roches. The three room school was
completed in 1957; students began classes in the
legion hall with Ruth Gaslin as the first Principal
assisted by Ruth Maloney. There have been many
teachers at St. George's. Two are noteworthy for
longevity - Rita Runions with twenty two years
(1957 - 1979) and Eileen MacDonald (1959 - 1976).
Since provincial amalgamation of small boards in to
large in 1969, the two schools in Ingleside and
Long Sault have been used as companion schools. St.
George's Catholic School is presently for Grades 5
to 8 and has a population of approximately 110
students. The French Immersion program is offered.
Students spend 50% of their day in English studies
and 50% of their day in French studies.
Catholicity: St. George's engages students in
daily prayer. Our Pastor celebrates mass with the
students once a month at St. Pius X Church which
adjoins our school yard. We have weekly Lenten and
Advent celebrations. We raise funds to help the
needy of our community and underprivilieged
countries. Our grade 8 students volunteer at Long
Sault Villa.
School facts continued history of our Patron
Saint - St. George
St. George was Patron Saint of England in the
days of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round
Table. His lore of valor against adversity and
protection of the Christians in a determined stand
against tyranny and repression sat well with the
ideals of the crusades, Jihad and Holy Wars that
would come to pass. Although it is in English
folklore that St. George slew the mighty dragon
near Uftington, Oxfordshire. In reality it is
thought that St. George came from Cappadocia in
Asia Minor. He lived at the time of the Roman
Emperor Diocletian A.D. 245-313. He became a high
ranking cavalry officer in the army of Rome but
refused to carry out Diocletian' s orders for
Christian persecution and as a result suffered
torture and perhaps death. He was canonized in A.D.
494, Pope Gelasius proclaiming him one of those
"whose names are justly revered among men but whose
acts are known only to God".

outside. Students are to remain on school property
unless authorized to do otherwise. Students who

by the classroom teacher and principal. Please note
that we cannot supervise students once they have
left the school grounds therefore parents are
assuming responsibility for them at lunchtime.
|

|
|
All students are expected to go outside for
recesses. Students are to remain within the
boundaries of the school's property. Students are
provided usually with a (soccer ball, basketball
and or football) at the beginning of the year. No
body contact games are permitted. Tether balls are
supplied by the school. To promote a clean school
yard, a garbage can is stationed near the door for
snacks and treats.
|
School Telephone
|
|
Students are allowed to use the phone providing
it is of an urgent nature. We will relay important
messages to students but prefer that they not be
taken out of class to answer a call unless it is an
emergency.
|
Visitors
|
|
All visitors are to use the front door and
report to the office. If you are arriving to pick
up your child(ren), please wait at the office while
they are getting ready. Please refrain from taking
students from the playground area. All students
according to the Safe School Act should be signed
in and out. Visitors are asked not to park in the
bus lane.
|
|
Lates and Absences
|
|
When a student is absent, parents are requested
to phone the school, leave a message on the
answering machine before or after school hours. As
part of our Safe School Arrival Policy, the school
will call home for any absent student not accounted
for by a parent call or note. On snow days when
buses are cancelled, no calls will be made to the
students who are bused. If your children usually
walk and do not show up at school, a call will be
made to your home unless you inform us.
|
Entrance / Exit
|
|
Students arriving / departing should use the
appropriate doors. The front door is not an entry
door for students (unless arriving late or
departing early). Walkers should not arrive before
7:50 a.m. as yard supervision begins at that
time.
Bicycles / Roller blades / Skateboards
Prohibited from the playground area. Bicycles
should be secured in the bicycle rack.
Walkman / Discman / Cellphones etc. These items
are not permitted in the school. Such expensive
items are better suited for home use.
Trading Cards / Marbles / Small Toys These items
should be left at home.
|
Health Care
|
|
The school cannot administer medication without
first consulting the Principal and signing an
Administration of Medicine form. Students
requiring medications on an ongoing basis must have
a doctor's form
on file at the school. This form must be renewed
each year. Any major accidents or injuries received
at school
must be reported to the office. Parents will be
called as quickly as possible. It is important that
all families indicate
an emergency contact person for our school
records and that all telephone numbers given be
kept current.
We are a PEANUT-FREE school because of
allergies. They are also reminded not to bring
peanut butter or any product containing peanut
butter. If in doubt, refer to the label listing the
ingredients. It means you must read the labels of
other foods such as muffins, granola bars, cookies
and cereals before putting them in your child's
lunch. Many commercially produced foods which might
not appear to contain nut products actually do.
Although this request poses an inconvenience
when packing lunches and snacks it goes without
saying that the risk posed by this potentially life
threatening allergy outweighs any such
inconvenience and we thank you in advance for your
support and understanding.
