Building a Sense of Community – Carleton Place Catholic Elementary Schools
The FDK students from St. Gregory School and Grade 4 students from St. Mary’s Catholic School, get together on a regular basis to develop a sense of community. FDK teacher Stephanie Emard, and ECE Pam Lalonde, together with St. Mary’s teacher Jill Nugent, recently worked together to fill and hang bird feeders as part of an on-going science inquiry. The students used recycled milk/juice cartons and art materials to create personalized bird feeders. This project will involve monitoring the feeders to see if the birds are eating and adding seeds as needed. The project helps students become aware of their environment and make observations about the world around them. It allows them to care for animals and become aware of important concepts, such as recycling. The FDK students love working with their older buddies, and the grade 4 students enjoy their visits to St. Gregory Catholic School.
