Sacred Heart of Jesus ECO Team Receives a Gold Certification
Congratulations to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School (Lanark) ECO team, who received a Gold ECO Certification from Ontario ECO Schools, for all of their hard work promoting a green lifestyle. The Ontario EcoSchools initiative is an environmental education and certification program for grades Kindergarten to 12, that helps school communities develop both ecological literacy and environmental practices to become environmentally responsible citizens and reduce the ecological footprint of schools.
The past two years Sacred Heart of Jesus has received silver certificates thanks to the hard word of past ECO teams. This year, Sacred Heart of Jesus’ ECO team consists of 14 students from grades 1 to 4. The team was involved with many initiatives to educate the students and staff on the vast ways to make the 3 R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle) a consistent part of our daily lives. They have promoted litterless lunches as well as energy conservation. The biggest challenge was the waste minimization initiative. The ECO team created a new way to sort garbage by introducing a small red garbage bin to replace the typical big garbage can, which is now reserved for only paper towel and tissues. The five week waste challenge reduced the garbage that Sacred Heart produced in one day from 1.8 kilograms to 350 grams. That means 1.45 kilograms of garbage avoid the landfills and are now recycled or composted on a daily basis. Way to go!!! The Sacred Heart of Jesus ECO team displayed leadership by promoting stewardship of our wonderful planet God has entrusted to us.
