30 Years of Black History Month

Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations – From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries

Black History Month invites us to honour the experiences, achievements, and lasting contributions of Black Canadians whose leadership, creativity, and resilience have shaped our country and continue to influence our present and future. This year’s theme, “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations – From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries,” marks three decades of intentional reflection and celebration in Canada, while highlighting a legacy that lives not only in the past, but in today’s communities and in the leaders of tomorrow.

As a Catholic school system, we are rooted in the belief that every learner is created in the image of God and is deserving of dignity, visibility, and hope. Black History Month provides a meaningful opportunity to deepen that commitment by recognizing the brilliance that has long existed within Black communities, despite systemic barriers and anti-Black racism. Through this learning, students encounter stories that affirm identity, foster empathy, and inspire critical thinking. Honouring Black excellence across generations also invites us to see Black students – and all students – not only as learners of history, but as future leaders, creators, and visionaries in their own right.

This year, the CDSBEO continues to offer a range of K–12 classroom prayer resources, mentor texts, and curriculum supports to assist educators in facilitating thoughtful and reflective learning. These resources are designed to nurture meaningful conversation, support anti-racist and culturally responsive practice, and encourage students to see themselves as leaders in building a more compassionate and just society.

Special Guest Speaker: Adrian Harewood

Adrian Harewood is a respected Canadian journalist, broadcaster, and advocate whose work focuses on equity, social justice, and the power of storytelling. Drawing on his lived experiences and professional journey, Adrian will engage students in meaningful sessions centred on belonging, listening, and understanding identity.

His message encourages students to reflect on their own stories, listen with intention, and appreciate multiple perspectives, while challenging the idea that individuals must fit into rigid or limiting roles. The sessions will be interactive and designed to resonate with students navigating a rapidly changing world, with an emphasis on empathy, authenticity, and community.
