As we begin the 2026–2027 school year, we want to share several important changes from the Ministry of Education regarding assessment and evaluation in Ontario secondary schools. 

Attendance and Participation 

Regular attendance and active participation are important parts of student success. Beginning this school year, attendance and participation will count toward a student’s midterm and final course grade: 

• Grades 9 and 10: 15% of the midterm and final grade 
• Grades 11 and 12: 10% of the midterm and final grade 

Students are expected to attend regularly, arrive on time, come prepared, participate in learning, and complete missed work when possible. 

Please continue to report absences through the school’s regular attendance procedures. 

Absences will be identified as: 

• Verified: A parent/guardian has provided a reason for the absence prior to or the day of the absence. 
• Excused: A Temporary Absence form has been approved in advance by the principal.  
• Unverified: The absence has not been verified by a parent/guardian and will affect the attendance portion of the midterm and/or final grade. 

The rubric below outlines how attendance and participation are assessed. 

Final Evaluations and Examinations 

In most secondary courses, students will complete a written final examination during the scheduled exam period. Some courses may also include additional culminating activities. 

Families are advised to avoid scheduling vacations, appointments, or other commitments during examination periods. Students are expected to write exams as scheduled unless exceptional circumstances arise. 

Semester 1 Exam Period – January 22–28, 2027 
Semester 2 Exam Period – June 21-25, 2027 

How Families Can Support 

Parents and guardians can support student success by: 

• Encouraging regular attendance and punctuality. 
• Scheduling appointments outside of the school day whenever possible. 
• Reporting absences promptly through the school’s attendance procedures. 
• Communicating with the school regarding extended absences or circumstances that may affect attendance. 
• Encouraging your child to speak with teachers when additional support is needed. 

Your child’s school staff will continue to work with students and families to provide support when attendance, participation, or academic progress becomes a concern.
