The Grade 9 Kanien’kéha (Mohawk Language) class at St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School has officially begun its second year!

St. Joseph’s is excited to welcome back educator Wathahiiostha (Theresa) Cook. Her knowledge, passion, and commitment helped bring this important course to life, and students are fortunate to have her guiding them again this year.

Students started the new term with the Ohén:ton Karihwatéhkwen (Thanksgiving Address), a smudge, a Wampum Belt teaching, and braiding sweetgrass. They also had the opportunity to meet Indigenous Student Advisor Jennifer Boots, Indigenous Grad Coach Stephanie Nelson, and Indigenous Education Consultants Amanda Landry, Colby Demerchant, and Melissa Mader-Tardif.

The rest of the week included receiving Kanien’kéha learning resources from the Native North American Travelling College and the Akwesasne Economic Development Agency, taking part in a beading activity, and sharing ideas for the class this semester.
