Just-Us Youth Day 2025

On May 8th, during Catholic Education Week, Grade 10 students across the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) took part in Just-Us Youth Day, a half-day event focused on social justice learning. The event featured a virtual presentation by Ryan Hreljac, a CDSBEO graduate and a renowned Canadian social justice advocate.

Ryan Hreljac began his journey at just six years old when he learned about the global water crisis in his Grade 1 class at Holy Cross Catholic School in Kemptville. Determined to help, Ryan raised money to build a well in Uganda, an initiative that eventually grew into the Ryan’s Well Foundation. Over the years, his organization has helped provide clean water to over 1.6 million people in 17 countries.

During the presentation, Ryan shared his journey, from his first successful fundraiser to building thousands of wells worldwide. He emphasized the importance of youth leadership, the impact of small actions, and the value of perseverance. Students also learned about the incredible story of Ryan’s adopted brother Jimmy, who overcame hardship with the support of Ryan’s family and the Ryan’s Well Foundation.

Following the presentation, students participated in social justice activities organized by their schools, including discussions, interactive games, and reflections on social action. Just-Us Youth Day encouraged students to explore ways they can make a positive impact on their communities.
