Nearly 40 years in the making, the St. Joseph’s Panthers Junior Boys Basketball Team has made school history, capturing the school’s first-ever JUNIOR BOYS ‘AA’ EOSSAA Basketball Championship.

The championship was the result of months of dedication and hard work. Since the first weeks of November, the Panthers invested countless hours into the program, practicing four to five times a week while competing in tournaments, exhibition games, regular season matchups, and playoff battles. One of the defining moments of the season came when the Panthers defeated their local rivals, the Holy Trinity Falcons, in the SD&G playoffs to secure their spot at the EOSSAA Championship.

Through long practices, road trips, and hard-fought games, the players developed a bond that went far beyond basketball. What began as a group of teammates quickly became something deeper – a team that truly became a family.

The Panthers faced a daunting challenge in the championship game against the undefeated TISS Pirates, who entered the matchup with an incredible 27-0 record and had won the championship of every tournament they attended throughout the season. Earlier in the year, the Pirates defeated the Panthers by 19 points, making St. Joseph’s the clear underdog heading into the final.

Despite the odds, the Panthers played with determination and belief. Sticking to their game plan and refusing to back down, the team delivered what could only be described as a classic David versus Goliath story.

It wasn’t an easy road to the championship game either. The Panthers first battled past the Smiths Falls Redhawks and the St. Thomas Aquinas Ravens, both hard-fought and tightly contested games that tested the team’s resilience.

In the championship game, the Pirates came out strong, hitting several crucial back-to-back three-pointers to build an early double-digit lead. Recognizing the moment, Coach Jack Chisholm, a veteran coach with 20 years of experience, called a timeout and delivered a heartfelt message to his team. He knew that if something didn’t change, TISS’s lead could become too large to overcome.

The talk sparked a turning point. The Panthers regrouped and began chipping away at the deficit, closing the gap to just two points by halftime.

The second half became an intense back-and-forth battle between two talented, hardworking, classy, and well-coached teams. When regulation ended in a tie, the championship would be decided in a dramatic four-minute overtime period.

“Those four minutes were some of the most exhilarating and nerve-racking basketball I’ve ever witnessed,” said Assistant Coach Grant Winchester.

Both teams gave everything they had, but in the end the Panthers managed to pull ahead, winning by a single basket. As the final buzzer sounded, the crowd stormed the court in celebration as the underdog Panthers completed one of the most memorable victories in St. Joseph’s basketball history.

“This has been a special team from the beginning,” said Coach Chisholm. “The Panthers went 26–2 on the season. Beating a powerhouse team like the TISS Pirates was a dream come true, and winning our first-ever AA EOSSAA Junior Boys Basketball Championship goes down as one of the biggest wins in my coaching career.”

Bryce Camplin, a co-captain known as one of the hardest-working players to ever wear a St. Joe’s uniform, earned Game MVP honors. Fellow co-captain Vitushan Nadarasan, whose calm, focused, and driven leadership guided the team throughout the tournament, was named Tournament MVP.

Additional recognition goes to Jaxson Berniquer and Vance Hickey, two Grade 9 players who delivered crucial shots and rebounds in key moments. Haydyn Nelson-Quibell was also dominant in the paint, controlling the boards and capitalizing on critical opportunities inside.

A special nod also goes to Coach Chisholm, whose ability to inspire his players and bring out their best has been the foundation of the program for two decades. Chisholm’s passion for the sport and dedication to the program has influenced countless young athletes over the past 20 years. When Coach Chisholm believes, the team believes. His players hold him in the highest regard and admiration and are willing to put everything on the line for him – a commitment that helped make this championship possible.

The victory also carried a sentimental connection…

Almost exactly 20 years ago to the day, during the 2005–2006 season, Coach Chisholm stepped into his first head coaching role and led the St. Joseph’s Senior Boys Basketball Team to a AA EOSSAA championship. One of the players on that team was Grant Winchester, now serving as Coach Chisholm’s assistant coach.

Two decades later, the pair reunited on the bench and in their first season coaching together, they have come full circle, once again bringing an AA EOSSAA championship back to St. Joseph’s.

For the Panthers, it was more than just a win – it was a moment decades in the making and a championship that will forever be part of St. Joseph’s basketball history.
