Thompson Island Cultural Camp
On October 29, 2025, the Kanien’kehá:ka class at St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School spent a meaningful day learning at Thompson Island Cultural Camp. The experience gave students hands-on opportunities to explore local ecosystems, traditional knowledge, and practices that care for the land.
Students learned to identify local plants and their medicines, practised sustainable harvesting, and deepened seasonal knowledge that guides stewardship of the land. They also helped restore garden and habitat areas, contributing directly to the health and sustainability of the environment.
Students also learned about sturgeon and the importance of healthy waterways, connecting cultural knowledge with environmental care and community practices.
The day at Thompson Island highlights the value of experiential learning, cultural connection, and environmental stewardship in supporting student growth. Engaging with the land helps students understand and respect the world around them.
