2020-2021 Indigenous Theme: Skyworld
The CDSBEO Indigenous Theme for 2020-2021 focused on Skyworld Teachings – through the months Cree scientist, author and astronomer Elder Wilfred Buck inspired us through the sky, illustrating the belief that “we originate from the stars”. To create his lessons, Wilfred uses the knowledge shared with him by Elders and others, imparted during ceremonies and sweat lodges to teach students to look at the stars from an Indigenous perspective.
The Big Dipper, Cepheus, and Corona Borealis returned to Ojiig’anung (the Fisher Star), Makinak (The Turtle Star), and Matootisan (The Sweat Lodge) as students stepped outside to observe the sky through the lens of Wilfred and his teachings.
